With my continuous explorations of combining two worlds – Sculptural Paintings combines the hand made (painting & drawing) and the machine made (rhino & cnc routing). Technology and the Handmade are two worlds constantly vying for attention in my studio practice. On one hand I struggle with technology and it’s lack of the “hand” but I now depend so much on technology to realize my work. Can I make the machine made appear hand hewn? Can I make the hand made more polished? I have always been inspired by Jean Arp’s wooden wall hangings, I often see them at major art museums around the world and am always drawn to their awkward not quite a painting not quite a sculpture presence on the museum wall – especially in contrast to the other art typically hung around them. I wanted to take cues from my own paintings and apply that same awkward sensibility to three dimensional wall hangings.
