When Two Worlds Meet
When the two worlds meet is a painting based on finally figuring out how to complete my life in a more fulfilling way. I've been chasing surfing since I was a kid. It took a health scare and turning forty to remind me of my love of surfing. Once I decided "I want to be a surfer" there was nothing stoping me except the desert! Moving to California and having waves on a daily basis somehow made my life feel complete in so many other ways than just surfing. I feel calm, present and open to the world in a way I struggled to find in Phoenix. I learned so much from my life I lived in the desert - I wouldn't change it - there's a resiliency learned from living in the desert. Living in close proximity to the native cultures and arts of the Mexican & Native populations infused my eye in ways I'm just now seeing. I'm not sure I would have ever made this painting had I not visited the Heard museum, looked at actual petroglyphs, lived with desert plants, hiked the surrounding mountains - all those desert experiences informed my work. I am now in the process of accessing that visual language and incorporating it with my new visual language - weaving my two worlds together - I somehow feel more balanced by it all…
